The movie "City by the Sea" was filmed
in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The story itself is based partly on
the decaying boardwalks of Long Beach, Long Island and
Manhattan.
Inspired by the 1997 Esquire article Mark of a Murderer,
written by Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Mike McAlary, City
by the Sea tells the gripping story of a dedicated police
officer who discovers that the chief suspect in his current
murder investigation is his own son.
Vincent (ROBERT De NIRO) and Joey (JAMES FRANCO) have been
painfully estranged ever since Vincent divorced Joey's mother
and left the decaying boardwalks of Long Beach, Long Island for
the anonymity of Manhattan and a successful career with the NYPD.
The City of Asbury Park was
used for several scenes. Based on only one pass of the movie
here they are - feel free to correct me.
1.
The 3rd Avenue Pavilion
- looking at the Pavilion from the boardwalk - the
"restaurant" is the one on the right corner.
Once a Criterion Candy shop....
2.
The Casino
and Carousel - bordering Ocean Grove and Asbury Park
- the scenes inside barely had to be prepped for the
movie - that was the natural state of the building
when the movie was made.
Noticeable
editing goof/sequencing error.
My wife is going to kill me
for saying this - but I spotted a goof - and I was half
asleep - obviously, I spent to much time as a kid down
there....
- At about 18 minutes in
- there is a scene where Skip (the big killer guy)
is riding his motorcycle south on Ocean Ave from
the unfinished skeleton of the condo on comes up around
the 3rd Ave Pavilion on the left side. (2nd ave
side)
- During his ride south,
the 3rd Ave Pavilion, where the restaurant scene is shot
- appears BOARDED up with new plywood to cover the
windows (so no one would break them as always
happened...)
- HOWEVER- Skip
comes around, and into the restaurant (boarded up...)
but the scene is shot - no boards on the windows in the
scene - a nice view out to the Boardwalk and Beach.
