Gibran, The tanks in Asbury were from an Armed Forces day
demonstration..the army set up a mock invasion on the beach with
wired explosions and tanks going through the streets.(the tank
treads did a lot of damage to the streets too..I was there with
my friend Karl and after the demonstration we hit the beach and
made off with 1000's of yards of insulated wire that was used to
set off the explosions..was a real find for a couple of young
ham operators.. steve |

I haven't read it all...but heres what I remember most....
the boardwalk was fun...people promenading and such...my
greatest memory- the BIG rides. Here is where I was taken to go
on BIG rides! I remember fondly the Bubble Bounce (TIP - TOP )in
one of the buildings, and along the boardwalk was a great
helicopter carousel, the Scrambeler was in the center of the
boardwalk, the Tilt a whirl was there also- there seemed to be a
train going thru this center area...and If I got really lucky I
would get to go on the Paratrooper...which seemed by far the
most decorated and like the coolest ride ever...it was the last
ride on the boardwalk, with a great higher (height wise)profile
than the rest!. (It had a ywllow crown in the middle, and the
legs were pink, yellow, and aqua I believe! the bonnets were
yellow and netted....not the fiberglass solid ones we see
today!) when I went back in '76 and again in '92- it seemed
impossible for them to fit the footprint of the Scarambler, Tilt
a Whirl, Round Up , Paratrooper in that space along with the
kiddy rides I remember oh so well. Someone told me the space was
narrowed in the arly 70's to allow greater street traffic... I
remember a Roll O Plane and a Flying coaster as well inside the
Ferris Wheel building....Perhaps even a Dive Bomber and a
definite yes to those Swinging Cages! outside the circular
building...(Swingin' Gym?) there was even a Spider ride for a
year at the end of the lake, where once upon a time was a kiddy
roller coaster and another year a 2nd Scrambeler. A Trabant, a
flying plane ride and bumper boats were also here in about '65
or so. My father died in '66 and there went my Asbury trips till
'76. and perhaps '92 when i was searching for a memory...like
most who went back- there were very few. staten island NY
