Hi Gang...I have such fond memories of Asbury Park. I graduated APHS in 1954 and was the New Jersey sprint champion...was a life guard in Allenhurst where my home was...the boardwalk was the focal point of my high school & college years for entertainment....my fondest recollections of the casino was playing all the wonderful pinball machines for hours on end.....my mom would take me to cookman ave to do shopping...the town was alive and vibrant...i returned to Asbury Park for my 50th high school reunion a year ago in august...i walked every inch of my beloved town and had tears in my eyes...i could not believe the downward spiral that has taken place......i relished every step i took on the boardwalk recalling all my past memories....i hope the town will be reborn again....what a glorious past it had.
                 cheers.......Steve Scheck

I have the original newspaper clipping with photo of President John F Kennedy giving a speech.
Plus I remember as a kid going to the boardwalk at Easter to 'stroll the boards' and get in my first rides of the season opening. Then getting a candy apple at the Planter's Peanut Store (yes they sold candy apples also) and bringing home fudge from the Criterion.
I grew up in nearby Sea Girt so going to Asbury park became more frequent as I grew older.
My first apartment was at 5th Avenue & Grand called the Saxony House Apts.
I remember the Paddle Boats and the Swan Ride on the lake and of course the Palace Amusements. I was one of the fortunate ones to have gone to the grande dame Mayfair Theater in all it's splendor with the 'moving clouds' on the ceiling and it's cousin theater around the corner was the St. James almost as opulent.
Does anyone remember the Monte Carlo Pool???(use to be located where the Asbury Tower was built) It was a huge salt water pool that was even freezing in July...it also had a separate diving pool with a high dive !

Hi My name is Ellen and my Grandmother owned a guest house on 308 4th ave on the corner of Heck Street; my uncle and Aunt also lived in a private house on Heck street also my other aunt owned a guest house on 2nd Ave so I have a lot of ties to Asbury Park. We were at my grandparents all the time there guesthouse was called" The Oceanaire" It was spotless - I helped my grandmother with the rooms she had. Every year I bought a new Mr Peanut  cup and was thrilled each year to see Mr Peanut waving to me outside the shop. Everyday we would go to 4th ave beach right by the scrambler and the car ride in the younger rides. We went to the auctions also that was a regular event. I was too little to go to the huge funhouse I believe was on Asbury Ave.but would go with my relatives that would also be down visiting. The price to stay at the Oceanaire was $5.00 per night.
Every night we would go to the boardwalk for my little rides ; have ice cream at Howard Johnsons or the custard ice cream store on the boardwalk. I visit Asbury Park  now and then - my grandparents sold their house in 1967 and now its a playground. Everyone in my family have great memories of the boardwalk and "The Oceanaire. If anyone stayed at the oceanaire or knew of it at 308 4th ave(corner of 4th and Heck) please email me at etmet13958@aol,com
