I have the fondest memories of Asbury Park. Going to the
boardwalk was a really big treat. Back in the 40's the
boardwalk was a miraculous place. I remember the trolley that
would scoot you up and down the boardwalk. The cotton candy,
candy apples, pizza; it all tasted better at the boardwalk. I
remember the stores under the roof that spanned the boardwalk
at the entrance to Convention Hall. Most of all I remember the
carousel and reaching for the brass ring. I remember the
thrill of getting it once or twice. Also, the paddle boats on
the pond next to the carousel. I remember the games, the
pitchmen hawking their wares. And I remember the penny arcade;
Getting change and playing skeeball and saving the points
toward some prize or other. All the machines were mechanical
marvels. Big difference from today's computer driven machines.
And Kohr's for ice cream. It was a fixture on the boardwalk Oh
yeah and walking the boardwalk at night with your friends, all
the lights and the smell of the ocean air. You could hear the
ocean waves breaking just yards from the boardwalk. The last
time I visited Asbury Park was back in 95. It makes me very
sad to see what the city and it's wonderful boardwalk has
become just a shell of what it was in it's glory days. I would
love to see the city revitalized so the future generation of
kids growing up in Jersey could experience the same excitement
that Asbury Park gave to me and my family and my friends.
