From Ed Levy - remembering the Fun House in the 40's

I can remember as an 8 year old kid the carousel music at the Fun House in Asbury Park . I would give anything today to hear that music; especially, when they hit that gong for the “ding-ding” as the carousel started. Then there was the sound of the rings loading into the arm. Occasionally a brass ring was gotten by somebody and a light lit up for a second as the brass must have made a different contact and lit up a special bulb. I am 67 yrs old now but remember it all like yesterday. It brings back memories that bring tears to my eyes. I even remember as far back as WWII days. In those days there were lots of soldiers and sailors frequenting the area when they were off duty. I even have a vision of a GI being pulled out of a bar near the Fun House by the MP’s. Also, I remember that for a short time there was a caravan of Gypsies parked near the Fun House and my mother told me to stay away from them. She was afraid I would be kid napped by them.

Yours truly,

Ed Levy (formerly of Elizabeth, New Jersey and also my family were  summer residents of Asbury Park from about 1944 thru 1951)

I lived in Jackson, NJ during the 1970's and 1980's and visited Asbury many times during that period. I turned 16 in 1975 and that's when I got my driver's license. I had an old beat up Ford Pinto as my first car so driving the circuit was out for me. Spent my early years hitting the arcades or watching the girls. When I turned 18, I hit the bars (18 was legal age to drink back then) and watching the girls.

Saw Three Dog Night and E.L.O. at Convention Hall.

Asbury wasn't the only boardwalk along the Jersey Shore that I frequented; Seaside Heights, Pt Pleasant and Branch just to mention a few.

I live in Florida now for over twenty years but I took a trip to NJ in October 2006.I went to Asbury and all I got to say is WOW! I couldn't believe my eyes. Most of what I remember is gone or falling down. Dirt piled high making way for new foundations for new condos is everywhere. New condos along the lake almost ready to be occupied. Streets torn up and construction everywhere.

Palace Arcades gone. Carousel building still there but boarded up. Palace Skating Rink is a mess.

Found out the wood for the boardwalk was just replaced. The new miniature golf course is reopened. Some stores along the boardwalk trying to keep afloat. The old Howard Johnson's near the Convention Hall is in bad shape. Convention Hall was being repaired and the movie theater is open for business.

I took some pictures but didn't stay long. A cold front was coming through bringing high winds, rain and cold temperatures. I am sending you what I took.
