Hello Everyone,
My name is Wayne and I was
born in Neptune. (Fitkin) or Jersey Shore Medical Center now
as they call it.
Being 45 (2007) now, I grew in
the Neptune Asbury area during the 1960's and mid 1970's. My
mother and Father loaded my sister and I into the old 1966
Chevy Station Wagon and headed off to the Asbury boardwalk
during summer evenings for a night of family fun.
Please stay with me as many
places names have slipped my memory and I may make a few
goofs on just where certain places were.
There was a candy store just
before the boardwalk came into the convention hall. I would
get the long licorice cherry whips and run up behind my
sister and snap her in the back of the legs and then a
playful chase began down the boardwalk.
Many of you mentioned the
Paramount Theater in the Convention Hall and the old Lyric.
For those of you that my be say in your 50's, my father was
a LONG time manager for Walter Reade Theaters in Asbury
Park. He managed the Lyric, The Paramount, The St. James and
for a time, the Mayfair. This was mainly during the
early 70's. He even was the Theater manager back in the
early 60's at the old Neptune City Theater across from
2-Guy's.
The building across from the
boardwalk to my memory was called the Fun House. They had
the rides there with the ferris wheel going through an
opening in the roof. If that place was called something
else, please tell me.
My mother and grandmother went
shopping to Steinbachs all the time. My father took me many
times to the cart shows in the Convention Hall. We would go
to the Howard Johnsons and get Ice Cream and Milk Shakes and
just sit and watch the people walking by.
Also, I THINK........there was
a place near HJ that use to have bands play back in the
1920's and 1930's. My father told me that his parents would
go there on summer nights to listen to them. Is that place
still there?
Again, my main connection to
Asbury is with the theaters there with my father being a
manager at them for so many years. And the other connection
is just like all of you, many summer nights on the boardwalk
riding the rides and just having fun.
Wayne
