It was a wild scene from May to
September, families with kids there all
day, and high school and college kids at night, muscle cars by
the hundreds driving around the loop for hours, steak sandwiches
and beer for one dollar each, all the latest movies at the
Baronet, Lyric, Mayfair, Saint James , Paramount, Sears, Park
Chevy, Steinbachs, Newberrys, The Press, lakes, parks, hotels,
Asbury Park had it all, except not enough parking east of the
tracks

If anyone spent time hanging out on the Asbury
Park Boardwalk in the late 70,s--early-80,s they would
have in their memories of a local
artist Johnny Bass, he set up his Easels in the Casino
Carousel. The Casino Building and Carousel anchor the Southern
End of the Boardwalk. It serves as the pathway to neighboring
Ocean Grove.
His work was an eye stopper and he always made time
for conversation. Johnny Bass painted light houses and the
Seascape. He was born with extraordinary natural talent
you could
always find him there "Creating timeless works of
Art" causing all to take notice the beauty of the shore.
This is the memories I keep with me.
If you were a regular beach goer on the
Asbury
Park boardwalk you would most
likely share the same memories.

MEMORIES OF ASBURY PARK
Cruising down "THE CIRCUIT"

Johnny Bass & John stoneman along with other young artists
Playing guitar on the boardwalk, people stop to
listen throwing cash in their open guitar case giving them money
to stop by Stone Pony and Mrs.Jays.

Walking By:
A Crazy lady shaking her head
spewing out words that no one could
understand, it was hard not to stare.

There was always this homeless man with bags
in his hands looking
like he's been to hell and back.

And the never forgotten "Johnny Bass" always there
Creating timeless
works of Art causing all to take notice the
beauty of the shore.

A favorite memory of mine is the
Princess Jan show; I believe it was at the Mayfair Theater.
We spent many Sunday afternoons there. I have a picture of
my twin sisters blowing out a birthday candle with Princess Jan
about 45 years ago. My sisters and I took ice skating
lessons at the Casino also; all with our matching ice skating
outfits. Back to school shopping was on Cookman
Avenue--before the Monmouth Mall was built--and at Steinbach's
for many, many years. My girlfriend and I worked at her
father's luncheonette, Nary's, where we met many people and had
a lot of fun. We have many an Easter picture of the family
at Sunset Lake. Asbury Park holds a lot of my childhood
memories. Linda Reid
