Memories
from my childhood! Every summer we would visit Asbury
Park for a week. We stayed at a rooming house on 5th Avenue
across from Sunset lake. This was late 50's early
60's. It was great to walk on the boardwalk every
night, it was booming from one end to the other. We
would go to the Monte Carlo Pool during the day. I
remember those yellow fountains in the pool, they looked like giant lemons.
We would walk through the tunnel to the beach. There was
a "taylor ham" restaurant on the boardwalk which I
didn't like to eat then but I would love now.
In
the evening we would start walking at the Howard Johnson's and
take "chances" to win stuffed animals, watch the
barkers trying to sell those cutting tools or knives or
whatever they were, and play miniature golf. Madame
Marie, who recently passed away, was telling fortunes. We
would walk down to the carousel and the swan ride on the lake and
then into the pavilion that had the big picture of the smiling
guy on the outside and ride the carousel in there too. I
would LOVE to see Asbury Park, after so many false starts,
return to its splendor. It IS the same
ocean as LBI or Wildwood, I hope it happens.
