It's
hard to know where to start. I grew up in the Middletown-Red
Bank area and always went to Asbury Park with the family-never
Seaside or Pt. Pleasant. My dad liked Asbury best-and he
should know -he was the Coca Cola man who actually tested the
soda at the stors. At least he was until he retired in the
late 70's-he did it for 30 yrs! I would go with him in the
summers sometimes when I was small. It was heaven-a soda
at Duckey's, lunch at the Miramar with Gus, and the
final treat from Kohr's.
I started working at Maxwell House Coffee Shop in 1969-when I
was 15. I stayed until the summer after hs graduation-1972.
Actually, Mr. Resnick opened @Easter/Passover on the weekend
to take advantage of everyone who took a drive "to the
shore" for the day. These summers were perfect. Everyone
who worked the boardwalk was in hs or college-we knew
everyone-it was a wonderful club. Our store had the waffle ice
cream sandwiches-home made waffles, not frozen. On a hot Sat
night the line went out 20 feet. We were right next to Barbara
Jean's and an amusement place whose name I've forgotten.
Besides the waffles we had homemade pancakes and donuts.
We decorated the donuts with red, white and blue icing for the
4th of July. People would ask when the donuts were coming out
so they could get them steaming hot!
I love this website and I have enough memories to fill a book!
Asbury was and is a very special place. It's hard to put into
words the feeling you always got whenever you first walked
into Convention Hall, or drinking that first cup of coffee
while sitting on a bench watching the waves in the early
morning sun.
I would love to hear from anyone else who worked the
boardwalk, especially all the alums from Maxwell House! Thanks
for this chance remember.
