The original Waffles and Ice Cream was at the same location
as Froggie's for 15 years before them!!! It was called the
Maxwell House Coffee Shop! (Yes there was even a coffee cup
with the good to the last drop drip on the sign) I know
because the stand belonged to my father Jules Resnick. I
grew up making waffle and ice cream sandwiches..... probably
over 500,000. We used fresh waffles that we mixed in 20 lb
batches and had the hot waffle irons lined up along the
front brick counter facing the boardwalk and on the really
busy nights we never stopped. I would start at one end of
the waffle irons, pouring the batter and moving to the
next. By the time I got to the end I had to run back to the
first and start taking the waffles out. Then start all
over. We used precut squares of either vanilla or chocolate
ice cream specially made for us by Briars ice cream in
Newark!!!
When Asbury was really booming in the late 50's and 60's we
had people lined up 10 across the front and 3-4 deep on the
week-ends....... Anyone who was around then would
remember. It was amazing. As I hit my teenage years in
the mid 60's at the end of the night (12-1 am) I would go
sit out on the boardwalk in front of the shop where all of
the local musicians would sit and jam on the benches.......
with names like Bruce and Lance and others that I can't
remember...... who knew then what would be??? There was
Always something special about that guy named Bruce!
I have many memories and some great stories..... feel free
to get back to me
