A
$3,000 program of public improvements is under way in this
resort community. For the first time since 1929, major new
construction is being carried out along the boardwalk.
By
the opening of the season this summer, it is expected that a
modern, steel and brick bathing pavilion,
as well as new boardwalk stores will be completed.
They
will replace a block of wooden stores and bath houses erected at
the run of the century at 4th Avenue.
Another
landmark, the Arthur Pryor Memorial Band Pavilion, is being
altered to increase seating, dressing rooms and other
facilities.
The
boardwalk itself is being raised for increased protection from
high tides and wind-driven sands.
A
new lighting system installed throughout the community.
Illumination will be increased 400 per cent, according to Mayor
Thomas F. Shebell. As part of the program flower beds in parks
will be lighted.
A
fountain with colored lights will be placed in the Sunset Lake
Mall which runs six blocks through the heart of the city.
The fountain is to be a memorial to deceased members of the
Verterans of Foreign Wars.
The
improvement program also includes a $500.000 sewer trunk line,
new perimeter parking areas, a $500,000 garage in downtown
shopping district and a $750,000 housing project for the
elderly.
Private
investors are also doing considerable building. It includes tow
luxury beachfront motels.
